Business improves in Jaffna
The business outlook is improving in Jaffna with the opening of the A9 road.
“We are now in a position to do better business. We can now transport goods at anytime, night or day. There is less delay at checkpoints also. We are confident that our business will improve in the future,” said Baskaran, a businessman in Mannar.

He added that local produce has also improved due to the large numbers of returness resuming farming.

“We are able to sell local produce for low prices due to the increase in products.”

Wells for Batticaloa returnees
Returnees to Savukkadi and Urukamam in the Batticaloa district who did not have drinking water facilities are benefiting from a collaboration by Muslim Aid and Human Vision to build wells.

“We have constructed five wells, one in Savukkadi and one in Rukam Kiththul. Two have been built in the Pathuria village. The fifth one in Hijra resettled village will be handed over to the public this week,” said Mohammed Siddique, head of Human Vision, a local NGO.

Update on resettlement – Jaffna
A total of 11,194 people belonging to 3509 families have been resettled in Poonakary, Jaffna so far.

“The returnees have been provided with tent materials and Rs. 25,000 by the UNHCR. In addition, selected farmers have been provided with water pumps and fishermen with fishing equipments. However, people still struggle with the lack of job opportunities,” said Poonakary Divisional Secretary, S. Sathiyaseelan.
