Sixty orphaned children from Vavuniya have been brought to Colombo on an educational visit. The Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau plans to train more youths in the north by establishing training centres there. The last group of 304 IDPs living in Batticaloa has been taken to Trincomalee and are being kept in transit camps until they are resettled.

Displaced O/L students will be given special classes by a team appointed by Education Ministry. Meanwhile, 6,000 youths from Jaffna have been recruited to the police department and will be assigned to the north after training. In Vavuniya, IDP youths are being given vocational training. The government says that the transportation of fish from the east is being carried out without any problems.

The registration of vehicles damaged in Vanni during the war is underway while in Vavuniya, IDPs, suspected of suffering from contagious diseases, are being admitted to hospital before the monsoon. Also in Vavuniya, a Child Focus Unit has been established in Zone 3, block 28 of Menik Farm, supported by UNICEF and Save the Children. Eastern Province Education Director, Thandayuthabani says that Rs.150 million has been allocated to the development of schools in resettled villages in the east.

More than 600 IDPs belonging to 201 families, have been sent to Trincomalee from Vavuniya and are being housed in schools. In Jaffna, the fishing industry is seeing a gradual improvement after the relaxation of restrictions for fishermen. The registration of births and deaths in IDP camps, currently being carried out, shows 302 babies were born during the first seven months of 2009. In Vavuniya, the education of 1,300 students in Periyapoovarasankulam is being conducted in shelters due to heavy rains while Paddalipuram school in Muthur East, is faced with a shortage of teachers. CEB has allocated Rs. 70 million to supply electricity to resettled areas in Mannar.

More than 300 babies born in IDP camps during the first seven months of 2009

There have been 302 babies born to IDP families from Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu during the first seven months of this year. The government has started registering births and deaths in camps and according to statistics collected by the Department of Registration of Persons, 140 babies were born to families from Kilinochchi and 162 to families from Mullaitivu.

The department has now established a branch at the Kadirgamar relief village said Additional District Registrar for Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu, Mrs Ananthi.

Shortage of teachers in Paddalipuram, Muthur East

Around 530 students in Paddalipuram school, Muthur East, face a shortage of teachers. Paddalipuram school Principal Sundara Moorthy said there were only 13 teachers for the students up to grade 11. He said there was a shortage of teachers for Tamil literature, English, Mathematics, Science and Sinhala and added: “The students studying here are from poor families. The teachers have to travel around nine kilometers everyday to school. We do not have facilities in our school. The school has 13 acres of land but we do not have the facilities to put up boundary walls around at least four acres.”

Eastern Province Education Director, Thandayuthapani said: “I know that there are transport problems in Paddalipuram village therefore we have started to construct hostels for the teachers. We have several other plans for the development of the school, which will be implemented soon.”

CEB allocates Rs. 70 million to provide electricity to resettled areas in Mannar

The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has allocated Rs. 70 Million to provide electricity to the resettled areas in Mannar district. At present, electricity is supplied from Kurunegala. Kilot Upul Silva, an officer at the CEB Kurunegala branch said: “The electric pillars in Mannar have eroded because of the salty climate. We have introduced new technologies in Thiruketheeswaram to Tharavankottai areas to provide electric connection in a perfect manner.”

Classes disrupted by rain at Vavuniya Periyapoovarasankulam school

The education of around 1,300 children at Vavuniya Periyapoovarasankulam school was affected due to heavy rains yesterday with classes moved into shelters provided by UNICEF.

Deputy Director, Meteorology Department, SR Jayasekara said: “The monsoon will start from October and will continue till January next year.”

Coordinator, Disaster Management Centre, Vavuniya, Vairamuthu said: “We have already taken action to protect IDPs from flood, We have completed 80% of the drainage works within the Vavuniya relief villages.”

Details are to be collected of around 4,000 IDP families from Vavuniya in order to process their release. Meanwhile, in order to speed up the resettlement process, the government has stepped up demining, having deployed more manpower and equipment, and is developing 35 villages in Vavuniya as a part of their programme to develop the North. In Manik Farm,  IDPs are being educated about the prevention of TB.
