Nearly Rs. 203 million has been allocated to resettle 2200 families in Karachi DS division Killinochchi. A child care centre in Zone 4 of Manik Farm is ready to house 400 unaccompanied children while the SOS organisation helps find their families. Meanwhile, around 3,000 students from Vavuniya, Mannar, Jaffna, Killinochchi and Mullaitivu participated in a joint Sinhala and Tamil peace building program yesterday. And there are five companies working to reconstruct a stretch of 11kilometers of road ahead of the Madhu festival.

Mullaitivu resettlement and development program has been allocated a budget of nearly Rs. 300 million for road development, schools, child care, social development, reconstruction and welfare. Welioya IDPs to be resettled before August 31 in Kalyanipura, Morawewa and Gajabapura areas. In Mannar, 130 children were released to Mannar Children’s home and 440 more children will be reunited soon. The Madhu festival will begin on August 6 with the expected participation of more than 100,000 people.

IDPs are searching for their missing family members and the government is gathering information to help with the reunification process before resettlement. The USA government is providing US$8 million to support the return, recovery and resumption of normal life for IDPs. In the meantime, 3000 IDPs in Jaffna Mirusuvil, Kodihamam, Kaithadi and Ramavil will be provided with temporary shelters, medical, water and basic facilities by IOM.

More than 6,000 IDPs are able to vote in the local election in the North and the Election Commission has informed that the postal voting will be conducted today and tomorrow. HelpAge is conducting mobile medical clinics for IDPs in Ramanathan and Arunachalam camps and daily 50 to 100 receives regular eye checkups and other general checkups. In the meantime rubbish collection and hygiene promotions programs has helped to reduce and control diarrhea in camps.

The government is making arrangements for a daily bus service from Jaffna to Colombo and Colombo to Jaffna. In the meantime, 2,495 resettled IDPs in Musali, Mannar explain how they are rebuilding their lives as 348 families from Puttalam and 94 families from Nannatan, Mannar plan to visit Musali to clear the area for their future resettlement. This week’s drama focuses on the reunification of families in two camps in Pulmoodai.

The Mullaitivu Government Agent and officials visited Thunukkai to assess the damage in the area and have reported that, apart from a few public buildings, most buildings are intact. In the East, almost 90% of IDPs have been resettled and the remainder, from Eralaikulam, Batticaloa and Trincomalee, are to be resettled soon in areas close to their own land. In the meantime the postal service in Pulmoodai helps the families and friends to communicate between the two camps and outside.
In the relief villages in Vavuniya, five Ayurvedic centers have been established to treat patients, daily.
