Humanitarian agencies provide educational assistance for displaced people in Vavuniya district

District Updates

  • Last weeks IASC report quotes as 153,731 people of 41,481 families from 7 districts Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Vavuniya, Mannar, Trincomalee, Batticaloa, and Ampara, to be displaced.
  • World Vision is providing water supply to IDPs. Officer World Vision affirms that “more than 1350 families in IDP camps in three villages, Velikulam, Pallian Aaru, & Devanpati, are provided with water supply. 48,000 Liter water supply for a day using 12 bousers in 2 trucks.”
  • Colombo based USAID and Washington office visited IDPs in the South of Trincomalee on the 13th & 14th Jan. USAID and officers from America also visited Batticaloa and met with INGOs, UN officers, Government and Military officers to look into the development and strengthening of humanitarian activities in Batticaloa.
  • Report of World Food Organization points that there shall be a gap of 90% to 95% in the supply of nutritious food by the end of January 2008.

CARE provides loans for income generations activities for IDPs in Vavuniya

District Updates

  • IOM is providing 6 months training programmes for youth of Trincomalee to get employment opportunities. “This shall overcome the lapse in technical officers in the district,” states IOM.
  • Oxfam GB makes arrangements for 6,000 liters of water supply in Batticaloa district through solar system.
  • According to Save the Children, 70,000 children are affected in Ampara district due to heavy rain. Ampara district AGA M.A.N Azeez states precautionary steps are taken to prevent against spreading of diseases.
